Perspectives on language evolution

What’s so special about language, and why does it evolve the way it does?

The Centre for Language Evolution is an interdisciplinary research hub, looking at how language and culture change over time.

We use laboratory experiments and computational simulations to explain how structure in language emerges as a result of large numbers of interacting individuals.

Here, we ask Professor Morten Christiansen (Cornell University) for his thoughts on the current state of the field in language evolution research.
